OBJECTIVE:

Get to your house on the other side of the woods.  You have a laser sword and a bike.  Be careful of aliens!  Eat snacks to restore health (green bar), and find more batteries for your laser sword if it's running low! (blue bar)

ABOUT THE GAME:

You play Max, a child of a government agent who's been kidnapped by aliens.   The monsters have overrun your home town.  Now you're on a race to rescue Dad from the clutches of the alien invaders before the government bombs the town to cover up the whole incident.  Armed with your bike and your dad's super awesome government hush hush REAL LASER SWORD, it's time to take the planet back!

HOW IT WAS MADE:

I've always loved these kinds of stories where a kid has to be brave and face down some kind of menace.  So this is a huge homage to ZAMN and all the feelings I love in a story.

Everything was created during the jam week, except some basic movement and collision code I'd figured out a while back in GameMaker.

All the sprites were made by me.  Most were drawn from scratch, but heavily referenced the Zombies Ate My Neighbors sprites for the kid character.

I would have loved to add more weapons and maybe some other goals to pick up pieces of a weapon or machine throughout the map as it's not super motivating to explore unless you're low on stats.

All in all this was a great time for my very first game jam!
